I put April O'neal in the garden today, and she completely dug herself undergroud. We couldn't find her when it was time to come inside, and I nearly had a heart attack....
We found her under a plant, completely covered in dirt!
My little digger!

Cute! Considering they're water turtles, they sure are good at digging and climbing! It's kind of amazing. Anyone who thinks all turtles are slow should see these guys when they decide they want to go! The aren't bad runners either!

yeah, i said the same thing. whoever came up with the phrase ''slow like a turtle" has obviously never seen a turtle move! mine HAUL and there's plenty of vids of other turts on youtube to prove it
the softshell turtle has the ability to burrow itself completely within a matter of seconds.

Just a thought... could it have been too cold or warm for her? Does she have an area for shade?

My smallest painted (a preemie) acts terrified when I place him on the ground outside. He'll walk a few feet and then try to dig himself into a hole. I think he's feeling vulnerable and is looking for a place to feel safe (none of my other turtles will do this).

Yes, there were plenty of plants for her to seek shade in.....as well the temperature was 75 degrees. Not too warm, not too cold.

LOL! They certainly have their own minds about things!
