Maybe there's something in the tank that frightens him.

i dunno if its normal, it probably is.
my 2 turts do the same thing.
after lights out, my turts frantically swim up to the glass and try to escape.
they do it for ages, when i sleep all i hear is , blumf, blumf,blumf,blumf.....
so,so enoying, but quite funny.
i guess they want to get some attention off you.
Probably after feeding, they want more, so they end up trying to get attention.
im pretty sure that it is normal......you just have a cheeky turt on your hands lol.
who knows when they will grow out of it.
i have had mine for nearly 2years and still they do it.
as for the guppies.......its only a matter of time!

My turtle sometimes swims in the middle of the night & I hear her large shell clang, clang against the glass. It is totally normal for them to just be swimming against the glass any time of day. Sometimes they are just bored! Or in Sheba's case, she is making noise to try to get my attention because she is begging for FOOD.

Yes, let's see some pictures.

When a turtle is a hatchling, like yours, his/her shell is typically somewhat flexible around the back. As he/she grows it should harden up.

On the shell peeling or separating, it may be normal shedding or it could be something else. It would be helpful to see pictures.

You are correct to turn off his/her basking light at night. Could you leave on a little night light in the room, perhaps? It should be pretty dark but maybe he'd feel more confident with just a little light on.
