Serra's little cleaner

Well most of you guys know I got a orange 1 inch male platy in the same tank as a two inch turtle, right? Almost everybody thought the fish would be food within a week. Well now it's TWO weeks! lol

I've noticed that it's a firm belief here that fish would become food eventually. But Serra has never, ever, ever made any attempts at eating the platy. The platy, now known as Orange Juice, follows Serra around whenever she's rummaging for food.

Whenever I feed Serra in her tank ( which is not too often, for she's a big messy pig!) Orange Juice eats up all the small leftovers. There was this one time when Serra was chomping a particularly long piece of Reptomin with Orange Juice nibbling on the other end. It was sorta like a weird scaly version of The Lady and the Tramp.

I think I read somewhere that sliders are more carnivorous than some other turtle species while cooters are more herbivorous. Or maybe Orange juice is being lulled into a false sense of security until Serra grows bigger and able to swallow him in one gulp.

Ha ha! That was a funny comparison to Lady and the Tramp! :D

Well, my turtles used to chase around the minnows I put in their tank and I think they managed to catch 2 out of the 12. I built a "hide" cage for the minnows in the tank so they could easily escape capture. Now they just leave them alone and the minnows eagerly eat the many scraps left behind by the big guys.

Yeah I have a fish that does the same thing. It's kind of nice! Although this morning the fish and Crush were fighting over half a grape. One on each end of it, swimming around, trying to eat as much as they could before the other one could eat it. LOL
I expect they'll eat the fish eventually, but for now he's good for cleaning up.

Thanks Tenodera for the laugh of the day! (that Lady and the Tramp image is a keeper).

Spot lived in his tank with four minnows for months - from October to January. Then one day he ate one. I happened to see him catch it. After that, I felt nervous every time I saw him close to a minnow and finally moved the remaining three minnows out to their own tank where they now live peacefully.

They did do an excellent job of keeping the bottom clean. Nowdays I use one of those little hand held battery powered vacuum cleaners.

I have two goldfish with my turtles. there used to be 10 but eight of them were eaten. Now that they know that they can't catch them they just ignore them.

It's been almost 2 years now and Michelangelo has never ate her buddies. She has 4 plecos, a minnow, a red sword tail, and a rosy barb aka Ten Second Tom. Those are her friends and she has yet to eat them.

So one day I was like hey, she's not going to eat any of the fish..awesome I'll go get some more! So I got a orange and black fish and two more barbs that looked exactly like Tom. Next day....the two new barbs (were smaller compared to Tom so I knew it wasn't Tom) had their tails bit off. Two weeks later, the orange and black fish went missing....aka I think she ate it. But she has never touched the original tank gang and I can add plecos at will (in the beginning she only had one..never touched it, I've added three since then and she has never touched them) So some fish are friends..now the guppies..she eats the babies, not the adults. So it is rather odd how they can decide who they want to keep and who they want to eat.

I've noticed my turtles will only be interested in fish and chase/try to eat them if i add the fish into the tank with the turtles there...they see it as food being added i guess, even though i don't feed in the tank but if i add the fish after a water change or something and put the turtles back later they leave them alone completely

My fishy tank buddies never last long in April's tank. :(

I get particularly attatched to them as well.....I've been breeding guppies for her lately, and now my feeder tank is getting quite crowded from all the offspring, and I have to sacrifice a few. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be different from their parents.

I bought Leo 12 rosy reds a few weeks ago. She ate all 10 of the "red" ones but hasn't touched the two that are paler and gray. I'm not sure if she can't see them as well or what, but they've done a great job cleaning the tank :-)

might be partial to red, turtles can see in color, and mine prefer certain colors of food
