hi everyone. i'm from ottawa, ontario, and i'm intrested in getting either a land turtle (or tortise) or a red eared slider.
i've only seen RES at pet stores (actually, onnly one store), and never a land turtle. so i searched them on the internet, and the prices seemed a little extreme. is $250 for an ornate box turtle a realistic cost?
thanks, alli.
ps: if anyone from ottawa/ ontario has any locations as to where to get box turtles or tortises, please let me know![/quote]

Erm I'm sure if we're supposed to put where we can buy turtles from.
Have you tried a local reptile shelter?

Call around to wildlife rehabilitators, or try turtlehomes.org. I got my boxie from a rehabber, at any given time she has 50-100 turtles in her home, either in the process of recovery or waiting for homes. I'm not sure if these people can help you out but there is a turtle rescue in Ontario.

I got my 3toed box turtles for $350 each so $250 for an ornate sounds about right...maybe even on the cheap side. I ordered mine thru a large chain pet store.

Wow, those prices seem extremely high to me. The boxies around here are for $40-$70, depending on age and sex. I paid $55ea for my baby 3-toeds.
But, I got both my ornates from a rescue organization for free.
