Hi i have two turtles and one of them keeps having a prolapse. Well i looked everything up and concluded that it is a prolapse. I was just wondering if i should take him to a vet or is this normal? He doesn't seem to be in pain or stress but i want to be positive that all this is okay and normal. I was also wondering when he'll stop getting these prolapses because he has been having them for a week now.

Since you say he "keeps having them" it makes me think that you see something coming out, then going back in. A prolapse won't go back in on it's own. If what you see is a black/purplish mass coming out and going in, then congrats, you have a boy! It's his penis. The only pic I could find was of a box turtle, but it's similar.

He's fanning, which male turtles do, and it's normal as long as it goes in by itself. Since you have another turtle in the tank with him, though, watch so that the other turtle doesn't bite it (on another site someone lost their turtle from loss of blood after the penis was bitten).

If it gets bitten to the point where it bleeds, it's better to have it amputated.

It looks to me like he's got his front half sealed up. Box turtles have a hinge in the plastron that allows them to close up their shell.

I've heard of instances where turtles have bit the penises of other turtles and it was so bad that amputation was the only solution, but I doubt the turtle would call that 'fixed'..lol

I think that they actually can get "fixed", but it requires surgery to open up the plastron, I don't know that I want to have someone do that to my boys.
