RI :(

Meeko was diagnosed today with what the vet thinks is an RI. I noticed that he's listing when floating, but Meeko's completely oblivious-he's acting normal otherwise (always begging for food, energetic, basking, swimming a lot). He's only an inch long and will be treated with shots since he's so tiny. Does anyone have an idea as to what his chances are? Oh, and he's going to have to suffer through a 3 day car ride to MA tomorrow since he's not allowed on the plane:( I feel so sorry for him!

Man thats sad! But it sounds like it may not have a good hold on him! Which is GOOD! With shots though he has a great fighting chance! And as for the car ride...make sure he has quiet, warmth and water a few times a day. (and of course food while in the water....)

If you caught it early enough..it should all turn out well. Just keep a close eye on him for ANY other signs.

Oh that's rough! I feel for both you and Meeko. It's encouraging that he/she's still eating and acting normal. Good luck - please keep us posted on how it goes.

Keep him away from drafts and car vents during the drive. There are some threads on traveling by car with your turtle if you search. Good luck.

Good luck with Meeko!!! Glad you got him to the vet. He already has a better chance because you were thoughtful enough to get him the care he needs!

Thanks for everyone's support! And a BIG thanks to SpotsMama for mentioning the vet she went to (the one on Preston Road) when she posted about curing Spot's shell! Meeko thanks you too:)

Oh!! You saw Dr. Julie! She was the third vet I'd taken Spot to and it was such a relief to finally find one who knows about turtles. There was a huge difference. Most importantly, what she prescribed worked for him. She didn't overprescribe - I inquired about antibiotics but she didn't think they were necessary for Spot, so if she prescribed them for little Meeko then he probably really needs them.

Good luck again to both of you.

Good luck with your little one! My little Riley who's also about 1 in had RI a few weeks ago, but I got him to the vet and after taking a few shots he got better. If you put him in water, make sure its warmer than usual because this helps them recover quicker.

Well, I was going to post today that Meeko is officially cleared by the vet and that I haven't seen any signs of RI for the past week. But, as I went to feed him a few minutes ago I noticed that his right side is drooping again when he floats. No!!!!!! I guess this means another trip to the vet:(

Too bad! :( It sounds like he's pretty tough so hopefully this time it will be knocked out for good. It's always a good sign when they are still active.

Ugh, that must be frustrating! :( Get him to the vet as soon as you can. I hope he gets better soon (and stays better, lol!). :)
