alright guys im lucky enough to stumble across another larger tank for free just gotta grab a filter for it...
i love my RES but i think if im going to get more aquatic turtles id like to branch out a bit more, check out some more breeds

im thinking of tossing 2 turtles in this tank of different breeds so far my local Herp guy has a few different breeds in stock...

RES of course
yellow belly sliders
Eastern painted
Missisipi map
Common snapping turtle "already a no" lol i live in michigan and i know how big they get here in the wild. let alone in conditions where they dont hibernate

He said he could get me pretty much any other popular pet breed i wanted aswell... these are all small 1 to 2 inch sized hobbist turtles, so im not sure how much that will help in mixing breeds and being agressive later on...

im hopping to stay on the smaller side this time around... so maybe a pair of painted.. an eastern and western... or a yellow slider with a painted if you think they will be ok together later on...

im sure there are a ton of other breeds i havent even considered so let me know what you think would be a good pair

How big is the tank? Painted turtles don't get as big as RES or YBS and they aren't as aggressive. If it were me and the tank was big enough, I would get a painted turtle.

Is this for a pond or a tank?

RES can be notoriously aggressive, so even the 10gal/1inch guideline would be useless.

its a 120 i was thinking 2 painted because of size and temperment... maybe an eastern and western....

Please do not assume that painteds, at least Eastern Painteds, are not agressive, especially if you wind up with two males...

im thinking more twards the other breeds... sliders are known to be agressive twards painteds... mixing painteds and sliders normally doesnt turn out well in aquariums...

thats my question im trying to find out what 2 different breeds would be suitable tank mates, that would also include weather they be male or female aswell

just because they're 1-2" now, doesn't mean they'll stay that way. you don't want to add so many turtles now that you have to make massive upgrades or force them to live in crowded conditions later.

No no this is a seperate tank all together i wouldnt want to stress out the old couple with new "friends"...
im only going to keep 2 in a tank at most, and thats only if they get along... thats why im asking ahead of time so as they get bigger i can reduce the risk of seperating them...

As of right now the wife is leaning more twards another pair of sliders but yellow belly this time... the ones for sale are from 1-2 inches now id like to get another mating pair if possibal but at that size it would be more luck than anything... im gonna guess all the ones he has now are from the same batch so most likely the same sex... but ill ask i think he breeds most his popular repts himself...

i'd get a map turtle! i love those guys. they're a bit smaller too. i had to give mine away because of aggression problems and i couldn't add a third tank to my apartment. I get to see him quite often still, but now I'm more of a god-father.
