I am taking Murphy to the vet on Saturday for a wellness visit/hatch day present. Is there anything that I should look out for? I know that some people on here have had dremels used on turtle shells is that bad? I just want to make sure that they don't do anything to him that might potentially be harmful.

if your taking it it to a good herp vet than i would just let them do what they do. they went to school for it after all so im sure they know what they are doing

I would be cautious if they want to give a vitamin a shot. Tell them you would rather boost his consumption of foods rich in the vitamin. Spotsmama has a good list around here somewhere.

I remember it has sweet potatoes and blueberries on it.

What have folks used the dremel for - tagging the turt. I've heard of that but I wondered if maybe they try to polish the shell or something. I wouldnt do either, but others might know if it actually harms the turtle.

I believe that the dremel was used for retained scutes. I'm not too worried about them giving him any shots since he appears to be very healthy. We are just taking him to the vet to make sure that we are doing a good job and so that if in the future something were to happen he would have a file. I don't know how good the vet will be, the office was recommended on the vet. I know that they are an avain and exotic animal vet, but I don't know if they have any herp vets.

Is this visit just for a checkup? Which vet are you seeing (I see you're in NY)?

Yeah this is just a check up; I believe that he is totally healthy. We are taking him to The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine in Manhattan: http://avianandexoticvets.com. I was curious if there was anything that maybe I should look out for. I went to them once before when our baby Monster was sick; he didn't make it. I've lost three (two dogs and an res) over the span of a year and a half so my faith in vets has been shaken. Just was curious if there might be some stuff unnecessary/harmful stuff that they might recommend that I should keep an eye out for. Really not too worried because he is an active and happy turt who spends his day eating, basking, sleeping, swimming, and floating (so jealous).
