About This Section "Basic Care"

See the picture of the turtle in the plastic water box. That's what my RES turtle swims in, and she is free to roam around outside the water box.~~~~

Sorry, I wanted to show some of the contributors I've been communicating with what my turtule set up looks like since I don't have a direct picture.~~~~

ohhhh gotcha. I tried to look on the basic care page and there's no picture so I got confused. it may not be a good idea to let her "roam around" freely like you described, if you mean she has a room she can explore outside of her tank. she might get caugh under something, get trapped, eat something dangerous, etc. try to post pictures soon if you can!

many people will tell you you cannot keep your turtle in a water box. how big is he? I've been reading about your water box (many people will disagree with me) but if he eats, basks, regularly and he likes walking around... then I'd let him (only if hes really big so I can keep an eye out)

I really like the way you describe your turtle communicating with you. I believe you and I think its awesome. how long have you had your turtle and how long has he been using the water box? didn't you mention that you used to have a big tank?

I used to have a 20-gal tank for her. Then I moved her to a 50-gal Rubbermaid container. She kept escaping, So by the time she was 5 years old, I let her roam free around my apartment, but you do have to keep an eye on them because of their curious nature, and escape skills. This is a sign of their ancient intelligence. "Always keep trying to excape, always check things out", seems to be their motto. You have to respect them for that.~~~~

Parker is 9 years old now, and looks just like the picture in the water box of "Basic Care", only she's bigger, same cute face though. I fill the box to the top with water so she can still swim and kick in the water. See the picture in this topic forum.~~~~

if you've been letting her wander around freely for a few years now I suppose it's working for both you and parker.

The turtle in that picture is in it's feeding tub (and it's done eating).
