I can't get over what I just saw.


I looked at Chomp's aquarium from across the room, and I saw what I thought was a new rock on the bottom of the tank. Looked to be about 2" by 2", beneath the turtle.

I went over for a closer look and I thought uh oh!! I saw that this was all dark-colored body tissue.

Then, all of this large mass of tissue was quickly retracted, back into the opening under the tail.


Was this just him er, excited?
or is this a female with a medical issue?

Not something to worry about, I hope.



Anyone know what this was??

Sounds like a schlong to me. Signs of turtle manliness are long front claws and a long tail. The tail should look like this.

So NOW WE KNOW .. Chomp is a male.


Thank you for mentioning about the long front claws, and tail .. I have often wondered about his long front claws!

This is my first pet turtle. I have had birds for pets since childhood, and I have always found it to be SO interesting: the little subtle differences in appearance that occur between males and females. Not real easy to spot, if you're not well acquainted with the species.

Oh yes, Chomp is a male for sure. With RES, the differences aren't so subtle. In a mature male, the front toenails can be 1" long.

I think I know why the color is so dark: so more difficult to see.

Out in the lake are many hungry fish and these man-parts would make a tasty lunch for some striped bass
