Algae on shell

What is the best way to take algae of the shell. I know I should use a soft toothbrush, but should i run her under water while I do it? I don't exactly how to do it, i don't want to hurt her. i think she may have shell rot, so i want to get the algae off so I can post some pictures.

Wet the tooth brush and give a light scrub, then rinse the area. Scrub as lightly as you can so as to not pull off any loose scutes.

km-do-1 My way! Turtles don't like to be brushed off but you have to do it. I use regular table salt diluted in a small bowl of warm water and dip my tooth brush in and away we go. I let the salt dry on the shell and do it again and rinse them off. I have done this for years and it seems to work well. The turtle will bite at the brush and you. Again they don't like it. m.
