turtle's favorite spot being climbing on thermometer

is this an indication of water temp. being slightly too cold?

i have it set at 78F for a map.

Does he have a basking area? What is the basking area temperature?

yea yea of course, big land area with a spot lamp heating his fav rock to low 90s and further away from it mid-80s

How old is your map? Is it female? Could it be possible it's gravid (needs to lay eggs)?

Other than that, it might just be trying to escape. Make sure it can't climb out using the thermometer!

umm... just about 3yo male map, he always have his arms and legs wrapped around the meter, i got a guard so he won't get burn.

i just don't feel well, i have had bad experience with a thermometer before, the bottom cracked and blew in the water and leaked out some substance. I had to stick my hand in there to grab my map out, kind of scary.

If you're worried about it, you could switch to a different type of thermometer. I use the kind that stick on the outside of the tank for a quick reference, and I have a digital one that I use for double checking the temps.
