I have a 55 gallon tank, filled to about 30 gallons. The filter in it right now is not doing much of anything, as it is rated for 10 gallons. What filter do you reccomend?

A filter rated at least 110 gallons or 265 gallons. Brand allot of people like Rena or Fluval.

If you're willing to fill it up a little more, I would get the Rena Filstar XP3

I have never used a xp3 but as far as i can tell it's relatively cheap and worth the money.

id go with xp3. cheaper than fluval and works great

Rena XP3. Really easy to setup and clean and works great.

I use the 5x rule when sizing a filter pump for a tank. That is 5 times the water in the tank. That rule is an at least rule. It is cheaper to use a smaller pump as some of them use fish sizing to size a pump. Some pet stores will tell you that twice the sizing for a fish tank is good enough.Stick with the 5x gph rule and you should be fine. Good Luck !

Im kind of confused when you guys say 2-5x rule do you guys mean the GPH or the tank size it's rated for? Like on my filter box it's rated for 55 gallons but has a GPH of 250.

when people say go 5-10x they mean gph. if you have a 50 gal aquarium then a filter that will turn over that tank 5-10x an hour. so you would want the smallest to be a 250gph pump but i would go higher than that and try to get closer to 500gph.

I have the same setup as you(55-30) I uses a Fluval 404 and it works like a charm.
