i have a 125 gallon turtle tank and i have had 2 painted turtles in it for along time and they have always been nice and close to eachother but a month or so ago the female died and i have been feeling bad because the male has seemed sad. so last night i took in another female painter from a friend and he seems to be very mean to her. will this stop or should i give her back? i dont want him to hurt her. does it just take a few days to get use to eachother? they are the same size both are about 5 inches

He's probably just trying to mate with her. If it's pretty aggressive, then you would have to either put a divider in the tank or return the aggressive turtle.

Yeah if he starts to act aggressive again it's best to give her back.

i dont understand him he got ahold of her neck again last night and would not let go. so for the night i put him in the bath tub so i could sleep and now today when i got up and put him back in the tank they seem fine they chase eachother and do the same little dance he did with the last female where they get in eachothers face and swim to eachother doing this thing with there front feet in the other ones face well i dont realy know how to explain it

Yeah thats the "mating dance" He's trying to mate with her, But when he bites her neck does it leave her bleeding or a cut in her neck?

If he did bite her, sadly, he will harm her again.

No it didn't bleed or leave a mark but will he stop after she has been here awhile? Its only been 2 days

It may stop temporarily, but it's more than likely that this will be an ongoing hassle (or worse) for the female.

It might temporarily subside, but it will happen again. It's interesting he did not do this to the other turtle... perhaps she defended herself.
