I have been able to capture and contain the young guppy fry born in my turtles tank. They are currently in a breeder net on the far end of the tank where neither the turtles or adult guppies can enter. I was wondering if it's ok to keep and raise my own feeder guppies in the same tank with my turtles. The food that I feed the guppies which are ground up flakes and baby brine shmp, collects in the bottom of the breeder net.

I raise some guppies in a small 10 gallon tank. However, my guppies that I placed in my turtle tank have bred on their own. I haven't had to buy any feeder fish for ages now. Mine aren't in a breeding net either. I understand that they may get eaten, but quite frankly they seem to be taking care of themselves.

I don't see why not. I raised them in a separate tank and got sick of maintaining 2 tanks. Now, the guppies and the rosy minnows breed in the turtle tank.

man...i wish the feeders i buy would breed. are the ones they sell at the store both male and female in one tank or do they usually seperate them?

the feeders at petland are mixed male and female. The males tend to have some color to them...mine are mostly silverish with some orange and black stripes...although not prominant. It took awhile before they began to breed. Then when they first started I was only getting like 3-4 babies each time...now I have some mature females and I ended up with about 2 dozen.

Your guppies are probably breeding but the fry (baby guppies) are probably being eaten. I kind of enjoy rasing the fry,evnthough they're turtle chow. I just found another pregnant female, she's my last. The males may chase a female to death after having birth.

I haven't bought feeder fish since August or so, I have 2 rosy reds left from the origional sale. 2 male guppies and 1 female guppy.

i bought about 30 back in November. The number got down to three. Now it's up in the 20's again with only one from the original purchase. The turts don't pay too much attention to them anymore.

Seems like our turtles have adopted these fishes as their own pets. My turts' tank has about 20 fishes or so, minnow and guppy alike. When I give into temptation and buy new fishes, my turtles always eat the NEW ones! How do they know... I think it's something to do with territory... eat the new ones and leave the old ones alone.

Anyway, yeah, guppy fry mature pretty quickly and can take care of themselves in no time. I don't feed them much cos most of the fry learn how to eat the residue of anacharis.
