So I was wondering.... where is the best place to put the tank? Do Res do better in a public area like a living room or do they do better in a more private area like a bedroom or office?

i think Kaya likes being in the living room when people are over she is always very active and interested in all the new people. it might depend on the turtle but I think they would rather be around people than in a quiet room that isnt used as much.

Rooms with heat, and an area away from a window (Algae Bloom!).
Personally, I think an aquarium or any tank that is not a "show tank" should really be kept out of public areas of the house. I think it looks tacky.
BTW: Depending on the personality of your turtle, having a tank in a public place could be bad because it might be too afraid to bask.

Personally I placed my tanks near a window(curtains are closed always) where right outside is a water spigot . That way i just take a hose and stick it out the window and drain the water, and the water spigot is right there to fill it right back up. I make my life simple.

It really depends on the turtle. My RES will not bask if we are in the room. If she hears us coming and is basking, she darts into the water before we can even see her basking. The only reason I even know she was on her basking area is because I hear her splash when jumping back into the water. Giving her privacy is not a real issue for us though, because we are gone all day five days a week. Even on Saturday and Sunday we are gone for a few hours each of those days.
I say put the tank where you will enjoy it most. Mine was in the living room until we just got the 125 gallon set up. I really wanted the 125 in the living room too, but the hubby did not want that much weight upstairs. The tank is now in our family room. I will say that people who come to my house like to see Angelina. I personally would not like to parade every adult and kid (not that there are that many but still) that comes in my house into my bedroom. In all honesty, my tank is too big for my bedroom anyway. Our family room is large, so it is used as a family room/office/play area.

That's the main reason I put Martha's pond by the window. The sewer's clean out is right by that window, so when I drain it goes down the sewer instead of out on the ground.
Martha's pond is in the kids' play room which doesn't get much traffic from anyone but the kids and she doesn't seem as threatened by the kids. My son can walk within a few feet from her pond while she's basking and she'll stay basking. If my wife or I tried to get that close, she'd be gone in a flash. Sometimes I can't enter the room. The two RES are in a tank on the counter in the kitchen. They love the attention, although they do slip off their basking stone if my wife or I get too close, but they'll quickly swim to the glass thinking we'll feed them. The kids don't scare the RES at all. They could put their face on the glass and they wouldn't leave their basking stone.

If they are skiddish when people are in the room, an enclosed basking area might help them feel more comfortable. Doesnt look as nice but its easier and gives them some privacy
