Hey i have recently become the proud owner of two turtles - both one year approx, one male and one female I was told they are yellow eared turtles, however they have the patterns/colours and the distint orange "ears" any guesses to if they would be more likely RES? thanks! Yes i am new ...

Hi, welcome to the site. If your turtles are under 4", it would be hard know their sex just yet. Can you post a clear picture of your turtles so we can try to ID them? RES ears are not always red.. most are orangey.

Yup, they're RES. You are right - the one in water is a male and the one on top appears to be a female.

It could be from cultural translation, the way tortoises, terrapins and turtles have overlapping definitions.
