What is your set up like? Water temp, basking temp? UVB light? Are the two turts in the same tank together? Could he be basking when you are not around? Mine won't bask if I am in the room, so if he is in a high traffic area that could be affecting it too.

What size are the turtles? How big is the tank? How big is the basking area? More info, please...

one RES 1.2inch
one map 1.3inch
floating island one one side of tank with uva/uvb in one bulb over island
floating island is 20cm by 15 cm
plastic and real plants on other side of tank (this is where the res is always)
water is about 20G
water temp is 74-80F
i dont have a heater yet :s
both turts in one tank
the tank is in my room...door always closed..nobody in my room usually...when i go to pick him up he doesnt move that much and the map turtle goes berserk...the res eats fine

I have an Aquaclear 110 in a 75 gallon tank and the current is pretty stong. I wonder if because of the current your turtle is having issues. I believe someone else used it in a small tank and had problems with their turtle too and when the filter was changed the issues resolved themselves. Just a thought

You really need to get a heater as soon as possible. You water temp should never fluxate that much and doing so can lead to sickness. A stable 78 degrees for a hatchling and a stable 75 degrees for an older turt. What is the temp of the basking area. It should be about 10 degrees higher than the water temp.

one of my turtles will just sit in the log. He's still active, he seems to do it more in the morning than any other time in the day.

If you buy a heater online you'll save a lot of money. I personally like the visi-therm stealth heaters which are shatter proof. On line you can get them for under $20 but in a pet store they will cost you upwards of $35+. If you live near a Petsmart, you can print out their page for the heater and take it to the store and they should give you the equipment for the online price. You'd need around a 100watt heater for a 30 gallon tank. Online that would cost you about $18.
Here is the link to them on the Petsmart page... if you print out that page and take it to the store they should give it to you for the same online price of $17.99.

I'd get a 150 watt heater for a 30G tank if it's filled up fairly full.
If the current is really strong with the Aquaclear 110, perhaps that's affecting your RES's ability/desire to swim. You mentioned above that he stays on the other side of the tank with the plants. Is this area away from the filter?

I might upgrade to a 55 gallon tank soon. What wattage would the heater have to be? 200 watts?

Think 3-5 watts per gallon of water (I use 5 watts per gallon of water).

I have a 75 gallon tank with a 250 watt Stealth heater and the temperature remainds a constant 75 degrees.
