Hi guys and gals, Im pretty new here and also new to having turtle as a pet. Not long ago i adopt 4 RES from a friend of mine. My friend got these turtles in his goldfish tank and damage all his goldfish tails so I volunteer to take these 4 into my parrot tanks.
Long story short, i now got them in seperate 40G tanks, I know it is a bit small for 4 turtles and i will do something either build an outdoor pond for them or donate them to someone else.

I have read and prepare pretty much almost everything for this fours to have a happy home but who know im so new to turtles so i probably gonna need your help along the way.

As of now Im a little worry about 3 of them have some white spot on their shell, and i have read here about white fungus so i want someone more expert to ID this for me. In the past, I had either two turtles or same one turtle jumpped off my fish tank nothing serious no crack shell. So i thought those white spot were just some scratches when they jump off basking area or when they try to sqeed between rocks.

Please tell me what on these turtle shell. Thanks

Looks like fungus. I think 2 or 3 in the pics are males.. you might not be able to have a pond big enough to prevent any fighting.

You also might want to do bare bottom. The tank looks great with it but i found it held a lot of poop and dirt and it was a pain to clean. If you take it out you can pick the dirt up and poop with a fish net. It's not the prettiest but it is a lot easier

You might also consider purchasing a stronger filter, in the near future--and your bulbs are a little close to the basking area. What are your temperatures?

@steve, yup i got 2 males and 2 females, all 3 of them have these white spot but one.
What would be the best to use on turtles without perscription? I had read your post about silver something but not sure if i can find those. I might keep only 2 (1 and 1) but still the tank gonna be too small when the fully glown.

@butterflygirl, i was plan to do bare bottom but my wife doesnt like that idea. I change water weekly with my fish siphon wh ich help a lot to suck out some left over food and their poop.

@jeremiah, i have right now 10i and reptile filter which both together rate about 70G, I know they are not big enough but the money is kind of tight. I try to clean filter 2-3 time a week to help until I can afford any hood filter. I want canister type outside the tank but from my setup and location of the tank, that is gonna be a little difficult. I dont want to add any thing else to the tank to make even less space for turtle. BTW since that photo I lower down basking platform about an inch the temp is around 85-100 water temp 76.

I'd reduce their pellets or at least review their diet. As for the fungus, it can be treated but if it returns, it will be very difficult to mange. With my RES, it came back and now the previous treatment (SSD cream) won't work this time around. People have used various OTC fungal treatments with some success, but there is not a lot of reliable info on it. Having them outdoors, where they can bask long hours under the sun and shed regularly, seem to be the best treatment. Either way, left untreated it will get worse. Shell fungus alone is not too harmful, however, it can retain the scutes or delay shedding. That is a problem, since it's the perfect environment to harbor bacteria.

If you go with SSD, make sure the habitat is top notch, and that they comfortable bask every day. Fungus becomes more aggressive, so you will want to treat it once.

My turtles alway bask but the location of the tank is not very convinient for them. I have the tank in family room where most traffic at so turtles alway jump off from basking area to either beg for food or scared of ppl walking around. I will try to bring them outside for natural sun light 3-4 times a week from now on. The feeding is pretty difficult since i have bro in law who love to feed them and no matter what i told him, he still trends to overfeed both turtles and my fishes.

Sort out the food in a pill box and keep the rest away. Leave veggies that can be used at anytime, like shreds of carrots.
