How long are you going to be gone for? If it is just a day, I don't recommend taking her with you. That is just added stress that isn't needed. If you are going to be gone longer, who is taking care of the turt? And are they prepared to administer any needed medication?

[split topic]

Is the eye swollen, shut or both? What is the condition of your other turtle? The two should be separated in case there is an illness.

Steve the eye is shut and swolen. The other turtle is just being himself, just sitting there and chilling. Right now they are both relaxing under the waterfall of the filter (their favorite spot).

There are a couple of topics discussing swollen eye treatments. The first I would try is applying cod liver oil to the eyelid. The other option are these eye drops from zoo med (I believe it is this one: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... atid=11311) and may be available at your petstore. If you search for those topics, you'll find out a bit more info...

Sometimes after a long time of basking (and turts sometimes sleep in the basking light too), the turtle's eyes can get a little dry/gummy & they have a hard time opening them up. Kinda like when you go to bed, wake up & rub the crusties out of your eyes when you wake up.

Usually hopping in the water & swimming for a few minutes resolves this. If the eye is still closed after 1/2 hour of swimming, then you can take them to the vet.

If just the one eye is affected, I'd try the Zoo-Med drops before the cod liver oil. There's a form of Vit A in the drops (which is why you'd be using the cod liver oil as well) as well as other ingredients.

Is there AC in the room the turtle is in?

Marisa, I got a private message from her, she couldn't get the drops, but the vet had an ointment for her. I don't know what it was, but she put some one, and said that it has appeared to do the trick.

Whatever the ointment is, putting it in just one time doesn't always do the trick. Whoever is going to be caring for the turtle should follow the instructions and apply it for as long as is recommended.

I'm sure she knows that and intends to do so. That was just the response I got from her on her lunch break.

Yes I'm putting the ointment on as I was directed. Seems like the infection spread to her other eye, but i'm taking care of that as well.
