Hi to all,


I'm just arriving home and I saw bubles around the basking platform.
The water is clean, temp is around 80º F, 10 gal tank 50% water.

Should I be worried about that??

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't see anything wrong with the bubbles, even if you don't have one of those waterfall filters. I see them all the time in my fish tank even when it has an internal filter. Maybe air stuck under the basking area and under any decorations you may have floats up and hangs around the tank. What I see though, is that you should knock the temperature down a notch, to the 76-78 range. Use dechlorinated ice, and it will do the job.

What size turtle do you have anyway? There is a rule where you have to provide 10 gallons per inch of turtle, and most of us do our best to reach it. So that means you have to have a 1" hatchling at the most for that tank to be suitable for your turtle.

Yes I know, but I couldn't get him/her a biger one for my adopted RES. He/she is about 1.5".
BTW, now I saw that my RES keeps her eyes closed underwater. Out of water the eyes are opened and they looks very clear.
I did a 50% water change a couple of days before, but I used a water conditioner for fish aquarium (Aqutan from Sera). I'm going to make another half water change but this time with bottled water.

Does the water have a soapy or slimy residue? Is there something you did differently? I know if I use too much water conditioner, the surface is bubblier for a couple of days. How often is your turtle closing her eyes underwater?

DanielRES1180: Yes, I have a very old Hagen AquaClear waterfall filter but it works perfectly. It has a regular mechanical filter, an activated carbon bag and I add one Ammonia Remover. I think this is ok for RES. Am I right?

Nop, water was very very clear.

Yes, but I made the water change two days ago with no bubles. Just this evening.

All the time.

Now I changed 50% of water with bottled water and my little RES opened its eyes under the water again Previous water or something was irritating their eyes but now it seems to be ok. Of course, the bubles disapeared with the water change process.

I had that before. I'd change the water if I were you. Is that new water in the tank with the bubbles or water thats more than 5 days old?

My tank starts to smell a bit when the bubbles start appearing. So I take it that its a sign of dirty water. Just a precaution.

I had 2 RES's named Salley and Lightening. I was having the same thing with the water bubbling up everyother day. I got up yesterday and found that Salley was dead. I am trying to keep a real good eye on Lightening. I changed the tank and rinsed it real good with very hot water. Should I be real worried with him getting lonely? He seems to be real active. I have a filter in my tank and was wandering how often I should change the tank water. And how to do it. I also have a water conditioner that they gave me in the tank.

Why is your tank only filled 50%? It's already too small (I do understand that you can't get a bigger one right now), but your turt should have as much water as possible!

You are not going to want to put bottled water in your tank when you get a larger tank, so why start now? I don't know what conditioner stones are, but I use a liquid conditioner and add the recommended drops. It works fine.

This is the maximum water that the tank support because of the cascade filter at one side of the tank.

Is it one of those "turtle-tanks" that has an opening half-way up in the tank? A specific spot for the filter?

Absolutely. Say, what is the brand of the ammonia remover? I have a sorta big tank and it's a pain to clean when it's time, even when emptying the tank with a hose.
