General Care Discussion :: Tank divider

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Aug 23, 2006 4:26 pm   Tank divider

The agression my one turtle has against the other has gotten worse. He bit off some of the back claws of the other one. I had to take him to the vet, and now give him antibiotic shots :( .

I just bought a 55 gallon for them, hoping that it would stop the agression. Which it obviously did not. I then bought a tank divider to seperate them, but it has little holes for the filtrated water to get through. The agressor decided to climb it to get to theother turtle! ARG!

So, I want to try to build a divider that can not be climbed. My problem is that I don't want it to be permanent. That way when they get bigger, I only have to buy one more tank instead of two. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can do that? :)

Thanks,
Melanie

I'm thinking that cardboard is not going to hold up in water. What about building a platform over the top of the divider, so that it makes a T shape, and then when the turtle gets to the top it can't climb over. I don't really have any experience with this, but it was a thought. Did you browse the photo gallery for some possible examples?

You can buy plexiglass tank dividers at Petsmart. Or, you could get some plexiglass and make one. I don't know how the ones in the store fit, but I'm thinking if you made one, you could silicone strips of plexiglass across from each other down each side of the tank where you want to put the divider. Each side would have two strips with a space the width of the plexiglass that would be the divider. After the strips cure, slide the piece of plexiglass down in between them to divide the tank. You could remove the divider when you wanted to, and use a razor remove the strips if you didn't want to use them any more. (Hope this makes sense to you.)

I know it's space consuming and pricey, but what about a second tank?

I've mentioned egg crate (light diffuser) as a custom divider. Above the water level, you could use something like acrylic/plexiglass or corrugated plastic.
