I don't hand feed my turts, I don't want to risk being bit. If I have lettuce or something larger, then I might offer it, and they will take it from me.

I handfeed my RES sometimes. He's quite deliberate in his movements and will usually will inspect and smell what's being offered before taking it from my fingers. He hasn't missed and gotten my fingers in a really long time.

My turtle bit me two times when I handfed him. He hardly does that anymore. He looks really cute when he sticks his neck out to reach the food. =P

There's no way to know what gender your turtle is until it is around or over 4 inches in SCL.

how long dose it take for it to grow 4 inches please tell me

A turtles growth depends on many factors: environment and feeding are the most common factors that affect growth. I've read that a turtle will grow to about 3 inches during the first year and then growth slows down after that.

Anna, it seems like you should do some more reading before deciding to get another turtle. One turtle is more than enough for most people and 2 RES are not necessarily as easy as it seems.

Anna, my turtle Spot doesn't have any actual turtle companions but he's adopted a stone to be his friend! Lots of turtles do that. Put a nice river rock in his tank and he'll feel like he has a companion, and that kind of companion won't fight with him or bite him or compete with him for food. Pretty good deal!

I used to have 1 red eared slider, he seemed super duper bored. So I got him a companion, if you're lucky they'll get along, and if they do get along it's not very hard to take care of. Just more cleaning and the basking area has to be larger.

my paco has a little plastic turtle as his companion.... i ocasionaly catch him going nose to nose with it..

How do you know what your turtle wants?

As humans we tend to give our turtles human emotions, but in all reality, we don't know what they are thinking, or why they do some things. We don't know that they are bored or that they need a playmate. Most RES are actually solitary creatures.
