[i]Hi I have had my RES turtles since March 2006 they were born in Decemeber so they are about 10 months old. When I got them they were the size of a quarter (I actually got three, but sadly one was sickly and never grew (I tried feeding all of them seperate from eachother and everything. He hardly ever swam, he just basked all day (I wish I knew of this forum then, becaue he passed away). They all had different shell colrs then and I could tell them apart very easily. Now the 2 River and Chubbs are the same size and color and I can't tell if they are boys or girls because their nails and tails are the same legnth as eachother. Long but not freddie cruger long. I think they are both girls. Does anyone know of a vet in the Citrus Heights Sacramento California area that takes or specializes in Reptiles? Do they all?

Gender of your turtles won't be known until they are approx 4 inches in length. I was told I had two girls, and found out that I actually have a male and a female. The nails and tale growth didn't come about until right at 4 inches.

As for a vet, if you visit the stickys in the Urgent Care section, you can locate a herp vet close to you. Not all vets see reptiles, and some vets that will agree to see them aren't always herp vets. Herp vets will have more extensive training in the area that you are searching and you're likely to get better results.

We have 11 dogs that we claim, and two females that are pretty wild. Unfortunately because of that, we have 2 litters of puppies running around right now as well. All of the dogs we have are dumps. People drop them off in the road or have the nerve to drive up the driveway and drop them. Someone even threw a brown paper bag on the front porch one time, and it was full of puppies. The two wild ones can't be caught. Even our local shelter sent out people and we couldn't get them. All of the other females are fixed at this point. Our local shelter has taken a number of them from time to time, they get sent out to be trained for rescue dogs, or to help the impaired. It's kind of rewarding to know that they are doing something great. I kind of wish I could be part of the training process, but I have no experience with that.

wow I really admire you guys for what you do...I can't believe how some people will do that. I have heard of people drowning puppies that are mixed breed or throwing kittens by dupsters because of a crooked tail. Crazy...Someone will want them. They should just have someon

Missi, I admire what you are doing too. I think it's awful how some people treat their pets. I have a cousin that lives in the country and she tries to do for cats what you're doing for the dogs. I admire her tremendously.

I believe you said you're a school teacher. If kids don't get the kind of sensitizing at home that they need to become responsible adults, then you teachers can sometimes fill the role. Teachers have so much more influence than they know. I'm pretty old now - my husband and I are both retired - but I still remember some of my teachers and the impression they made when I was young and how they helped shape my character for the rest of my life. I'm sure they didn't realize it at the time - nor did I.
