For awhile this evening he just layed on the dock under the basking lamp. His arms, legs, and head were all extended out kind of were it looks like he's dead but he's not. Right now he is currently float swimming basically he's floating and swimming if that makes any sense. He seems to swim where the heater and filter are. I took Remy out of the tank for now cause he tends to be a stinker and tries to get on the dock and pushes Leo out of the way. I've tried feeding him a little piece of salmon but he wouldn't eat it. I even tried putting a few pellets in salmon juice to see if he would eat that but he didn't so I've basically stopped trying to feed him since he doesn't seem to want to eat at all. Right now he just seems to be struggling in the water. He's at the bottom of the tank. Also he does have a soft spot on his shell in the top right hand corner. I plan on getting him to a herp vet asap tomorrow. I just hope that he's still alive in the morning. All I can say for the people who have turtles and other animals that aren't doing well is just to have some faith and pray for them. I'll keep yall updated on any major changes.

Quick Update: Ok right now Leo is just sitting at the bottom of the tank. I'm almost beginning to wonder if he is still alive. Their's one question I would like answered. How can you tell if a RES is dead? It's thundering outside and I think it might be scaring him a bit.

Leo has passed away. He was possibly dead at around the time I posted my last message which was 9:03pm. I am really sad because I feel like I could of done something to save him. It really kind of depresses me now. It almost makes me wonder if I should even keep my other turtle. Anyways I thank you for all your help and support. For now I will try to get through the rest of the night. Goodnight everyone.

I'm so sorry for your loss! You should definately clean the tank really well and everything in it if you're thinking of keeping the other turtle (you'll have to get advice from others on here on exactly how to clean it)- make Remy your number one priority right now because sickness is contagious between turtles! You should probably take Remy to the vet to get him checked out! Don't blame yourself for Leo- you had plans to take him to a vet and it seems if he went that quick, it was his time! Keep us updated on Remy! Again, sorry for your loss!

I'm sorry for your loss... was Leo a little baby? I have read often that sometimes hatchlings/ young turts die and theres no possible way to save them.. I am thinking about getting hatchlings later on, and thats something I need to consider, knowing that no matter what I do, no matter how many vets, they may not make it. Don't blame yourself...

I think Leo was in so much pain that he decided to jump off the dock and go underwater to let the pain take its last course. He wasn't a hatchling but he still looked like a baby. He was probably 4 to 5 inches. Remy is a bit bigger I'd say he's about 5 1/2 to 6 inches. I still may consider getting another turtle but it may be awhile before I even decide to do that. But thank you all for your kind words and advie which I will take.

Gosh, I'm so sorry to hear this news! Definitely do a good thorough cleaning on your tank & filter (use bleach to kill bacteria & rinse well). Remy will need you right now so keep a good eye on him to make sure he didn't pick up something from Leo.

Don't let one turtle loss deter you from keeping turtles. It sounds like you are a very caring person & Remy really needs you right now! The first turtle I ever had died of Pneumonia (Turtle RI) before I knew anything about turtle-keeping & I was determined to never have that happen ever again. We all learn and as long as we correct any mistakes we make, you have nothing to worry about. The way I see it, my current RES has benefited of 17 yrs of loving (and educated) care from me. That would not have been possible if I hadn't learned properly how to care for her from my first experiences with turtle keeping. I loved my little painted turt (Binky) and it hurt when she died. But I am also very grateful for my Sheba who has been with me for so long!

Don't give up! There are many caring people on this board who can help you with any questions you have!
