My Rosey Red minnows had babies

Hello. I know this discussion has been on here more than once..but I got 4 adult Rosey Red minnows for River and Chubbs about a month ago AND ONE DIED right after I put them in the tank...so they ate him...but they refuse to chase after the lively ones...They'd rather eat pellets, Romaine and anacharis...which is good too...However one of my fat rosey's had some fry...I saw one 5 days ago and I saw 5 today and they are bigger...The momma looks like she may be having more too. I guess ....the thing is...I don't want my tank to be a bunch of minnows swimming around...so is there anyone around the Sacramento -Rosevile area who might need some? Or do you think I can put them on craigslist for free...or donate them back to the pet store? Hey I could even find a lake that allows fishing with live bait and go fishing with them but are there any more ideas? What do you think? Thanks in advance.

Interesting, I thought that Rosey Red Minnows laid eggs? Do you have any other fish in the tank besides the minnows? Have you found any eggs(they are usually on hard surfaces like rocks, or clay pots.)?

P.S. Nothing wrong with a fishing trip!!

Oh wow...Maybe they were once eggs...Never thought of looking for those...Thanx...I'll do that. I have one goldfish that is about 4 inches long in ther. They never ate him either...which is good sinse he is fatty...Maybe he ate the rest of the eggs...Are minows protective of their eggs? When I first saw the baby fry he was about 2 mm long (about an 1/8 of an inch) now they are about 5 mm long (maybe a little over a quarter of an inch...they are so cute!)

If you didn't see any eggs, it could be the goldfish was pregnant when you bought it. How long ago did you buy the goldfish?

YES!!! When I read what the male does for the eggs I was just like  !!

Read though this so you get an idea of what it takes for Rosy's to breed, there are also some good pics of the fry at the bottom of the page...

Thank you..THAT SITE WAS VERY INFORMATIVE. I think my minnows are just regular because they are not clear or orange...They are brownish I guess. I asked for rose red but sometimes pet store associates don't know any better than I do. I took a closer look at the rocks I have in there..and I can't guarantee som did not get eaten by the big goldfish in there...or by a female minnow. There are ons of eggs though..I hardly see any surfaces that are not covered with eggs...I think I have 2 females and one male that might make sense. Thanks for all your help...I left my camera at my inlaws...maybe when I get it back I'll try to post some pics.

I am glad I could help. It sound like you got fathead minnows instead of the rosy reds. They are basically the same, just different colors.

Good luck with your baby minnows!!! :D
