I've never seen anything like that in Spot's tank - and he's an adult male. I've had him since he was around 6 months old so I had him through his adolescence.

I wonder if you've got some fungus or bacterial matts going. Or maybe some sort of algae. Was it completely white or sort of muddy looking?

Could it be shed skin floating around?

It could also be benefecial bacteria(tottally harmless), I sometimes get something similar to what your talking about inside my filter.

I have the same problem...There's white slime growing on the rubber of the heater...

To my knowledge, beneficial bacteria is invisible...Is the white slime floating or on objects? If it's on objects, it sounds like they need to be scrubbed.
