quivering fingers question

My turtle has just started doing the whole quiver its feet in the face of my piece of drift wood (LOL).
two questions... 1. will turtles do it to anything ? i.e. is it normal to be doing it to a piece of wood? and 2. Do only males do it or females as well?

Isn't it cute? They will fixate on something and quiver at it as long as it is available. Usually they pick a rock as the object of their affection but sometimes it's other things. My boy fell in love with a little plaster alligator but I had to take it away from him when he got his head stuck in a hole in the bottom of it and nearly drowned. If you take his object away from him, he'll search for it earnestly for awhile then pick something else to shower with affection.
I don't think the females do it. It's more of a guy thing.

Turtles will flutter at just about anything (I've got a painted that flutters at the probe of his thermometer, my RES has certain rocks that he spends time fluttering at every day. When he was in a regular tank, he'd flutter at my finger pressed against the side of the glass). The behavior is not restricted to males, females will flutter at females as well.
