African Dwarf Frogs?
Posted: Wed Jun 06, 2007 3:06 pmany body have or have had these in their aquarium with their RES?..i doubt my turtle will bother/eat is because ive had the same 2 survivor rosie red minnows for about a month now..anyone?

Posted: Wed Jun 06, 2007 5:43 pmI wouldn't recommend it. Even if the RES hasn't gone after the frog yet, he will eventually, especially when the RES gets bigger. ADF's are tiny little guys (not aggressive) & unfortunately he wouldn't stand a chance!
The other reason you shouldn't put them together is because ADF's & ACF's are cool-water frogs (65-70 degree temp water is best). They won't do well with a RES since RES's like the water to be 76-80 degrees. Frogs are very sensitive to water temperature.
Good news is that your ADF can live in a small tank that will be easy to clean (5-10 gallon size) so even if he is in a separate container it really isn't much work for you. I only know because I have an ACF in a 20gal tank & I do partial water changes about 1-2 times a week. It's only about 25-50% of the water changed at a time which isn't too much since I only fill his tank up half-way.

and yes industrial,
ill prolly end up having a new setup in a month or so, already got an extra 10 gallon tank.
what else do you have in the tank with your frog(s)?..they had them in the same tank with some fish at petsmart.

Posted: Thu Jun 07, 2007 4:45 pmI have some smooth river rocks + a little hideout where the frog can nap in the afternoons. The hideout was just this plastic smooth rock with an opening that I got at the local Petco (or Petsmart?) for not much money....I think it was around 5-6 bucks. The rocks were just part of the landscaping here at work. I grabbed a few handfuls & cleaned them really well & added them to the tank. I tried to get a good variety of colors (speckled, brown, off-white) since ACF's like to change their body color to match their surroundings. Then I bought a few larger smooth glass beads for some added color.
iac637 - yes, they do swim quite a bit. Mine tends to like to come to the surface with his body completely stretched out, nose above the water, and breathe. He will stay like this for an hour! Then he might swim back down. Sometimes he attacks one of the guppies in the tank & eats it. At night, he ribbits for many hours. He's actually pretty amusing!

My Aquatic Clawed Frog (ACF) is a male & those only grow to be around 2.5 inches long (body length). The females are bigger & body length can be almost 4 inches long & are very chubby. They don't require UVB or UVA lights. They prefer lower light conditions since they are aquatic & don't bask. You can't take this frog out of the tank & play with him since he is basically a "fish out of water" & can't really walk on land (they will scoot scoot their body on land like a GI Joe!). Plus, I have to keep a cover on the tank so he can't jump out (he would dry out if he was out of the water for too long). They shouldn't be handled because they have a special slime-coat on their skin that has natural antibiotic properties & prevents them from getting sick. Handling can wipe the coating off & can leave them susceptible to infection.
ADF's are just the smaller cousins for ACF's. Their bodies never get longer than 1" long. They are so cute! Don't put ACF's & ADF's in the same tank though because a bigger frog will EAT the little one (or at least terrorize the poor little guy). YIKES.
He is not one of the frogs that carries the eggs on the back (that's a "surinam toad"). When ACF's lay eggs, they just lay them & swim away. Unfortunately, in a tank situation, it makes a HUGE slimy mess in the tank. LOL!

That's so cool that you know so much about frogs, Kristen! I've got an Argentine Horned Frog (pacman) name Bubba the Hutt (Jabba's long lost cousin). He was the size of a half dollar when I first got him, now he's about 4" around and all mouth. 
I love the way he just sits in his little hole in the ground and gobbles up anything that comes near him. Right now he eats mostly crickets and occasional frozen/thawed fuzzy mice. I can't wait til he gets to be the size of a dinner plate!

Posted: Mon Jun 11, 2007 10:19 amIt's a tadpole in a tiny, maybe 2 pint capacity habitat with food and you get to watch it grow into a frog. When I was in elementary school all the girl scouts got them and were allowed to bring them to school to put on their desks during the day. I was so jealous because my mom wouldn't let me be a girl scout. The next year they all got hermit crabs they were also allowed to bring to school...stupid girl scouts...
