What's Up Everyone?

I just re-sealed my old 30 gallon aquarium and bought replacement o-rings for my old Marineland Magnum 200. My tank looks as good as new, and the 20 year old canister filter is working very well.

My question has to do with too much water movement.

My turtle, Alvin, is only about 1.5 inches long. I've set up a submersible filter to disperse the filtered water across the tank and, therefore, keeping the water well circulated and clean. Alvin is able to chill on his plants with little to no movement, but when he tries to swim thru the center of the tank he may struggle a bit against the current.

I'm guessing that since RES live in natural streams in the wild that they shouldn't have any trouble with a little movement. Alvin isn't flung around uncontrollably, but is there anything I should know or be aware of before I continue?

I can take pictures or even video if anyone needs a visual explanation.

i dont think RES are really used to strong currents since most live in ponds and what not, but as long as your turtle can still swim without being thrown back and tossed around the tank it should be fine. you may not even need the submersible filter.

It's hard to get too much water movement in an aquarium, unless you have a 10 gallon tank or something. My turtle enjoys swimming against the current, I think. I often see her swimming into it.

I agree. He's got "quiet" spots to rest, which is important. And if he's able to still swim against the current, it should be fine. He'll grow fast too, so I'm sure in no time the current will pose no problems.

ok i'll start by saying this is my first turtle and we've learned together . i had 2 aquaclear 70's in my 55, cranked them all the way up. i think i was cycling my tank 16 times an hour crazy flow and crush loved it, he'd swim in place and then stop and get pushed then he'd swin straight into the flow. he'd do it for hours. now he does it with the output of my rena. i say depends on if he enjoys it or not, it's gotta suck being in a tank all day no matter how big.

thanks, i took the submersible filter out for now, he seems to explore his new habitat a bit more, and i'm taking that as a good sign.

watching and reading your turtles actions is half the battle and half the fun.
