i was thinking since i'm broke i could build my own aquarium out of plexiglass and that aquarium silicone y'all talk about. would you recommend this? what's a good material to use for the brace? what's the largest you would recommend?

thanx.

Those are a couple of posts that I found when I searched. There are numerous postings on the web for DIY, but I'm not sure which are reliable. Others can add their opinions on that.

Well, even though an aquarium is a simple design, it needs to have some skilled hands put it together. It really depends on the resources available to you, but it may not produce a significant amount of savings. My custom tank was not cheap, but the custom stand saved me a lot compared to those nice wooden ones out there.

I made mine out of PVC pipe, some PVC joints, a bathroom tile, and a thinner piece of tile/ceramic, and plexi-glass. All of it was bought at Lowe's for like $12.

Here's a pic, for an idea.
