I figured I'd mention this for any Floridians with RES. ^^ The little pet store near us in Port Orange part of Volusia County has Cuttlebone you can buy for 50 cents a piece with no kind of a backing. It's actually really nice like that as we just break it up and put a piece in once in awhile. If I had a camera I'd take a picture of a piece but since I don't Oh well.

Most have a piece of plastic against them. At least thats what most people say on here.. these ones a just long ovals that are meant to be attached to a little tin metal holder over and over sorry but since these are refil ones they don't have the tin holder and are really good in my oppinion for a turtle.

Yup.. Guess so.. It makes it alot more difficult to break up..

oh do you mean the metal thing that holds it to the birdcage bars? i thought you ment there was some sort of plastic sheet covering the back edge.

Were talking about plastic that covers the back, not a metal thing.

the metal thing and the plastic backing have to be taken off. ive never seen any cuttlebone without the backing

The backing on cuttlebone is not plastic. It's a natural shell-like material that is part of the bone. All the same, it does need to be chipped off.

Are you sure the one you buy has no backing? I find it hard to believe that they would remove the backing commercially, unless they grind it off or something?

Yes I'm pretty sure.. We can snap it with no problems it's got not backing that I recognize as a backing and well it's meant as refils for the little metal tin items that hold it on the cage only it doesn't come with them.

When you buy the cuttlebone for aviary use it seems to always have the 'backing' on it, although this is what many people buy because it tends to be slightly cheaper or more readily available.

We just bought Zoo Med Turtle Bone (for the 1st time) because it specifically did not have the backing on it, which is apparently a pain to remove from what I have read in other posts.

Considering that it is still pretty cheap, I intend to avoid the stuff with the backing. Both Petsmart and Aquarium Services (Big Al's) carry it locally.

are you sure it doesnt have the backing? i opened a box of it at petsmart to see if it had the backing and it still did.
