is this a good product?

i noticed that my turtle's shell was kinda curling. so i did some info and it said it was pyramiding because of overfeeding. i was also reading that people in these situations use something called cuttlebone? i did a little hunting on the internet and stumbled over this item:

i was just wondering if this could be a subsittute for the cuttlebone and still do its work. thanks

I'll tell you what that is... it's cuttlebone, packaged and marketed as 'turtle bone' so they can up the price by like 300%. Go to the bird section and look for it.. way cheaper. Some stores sell it in bulk for really cheap.

alright thanks, but my local petshop, they give me a discount because they like me and the turtle bone is 1.99 plus the discount so, thanks for the quick respone too

I believe that stuff still comes with the hard backing. You have to take it off.
Does anyone know how long cuttlebone lasts? Basically, can it go bad?

Christi, I take the cuttlebone out once it sinks, dry it out for a day or two and toss it back in again. Not sure if it goes bad but it doesn't seem to.

i recently got the turtle bone from my petstore. when i got home i didnt notice the hard back immediatly, for i just picked at a yellow covering on it. it didnt all come all so i put it in anyways, is this bad?

The backing is difficult to digest. Best thing to do is take the rest of it off.

I don't think the back is digestible, and a sharp piece could cut your turtle, either if it's bitten or while it passes through the digestive track.
Usually, if the cuttlebone has been waterlogged and dried out, it will float for a while, but will sink again more quickly. I don't think it goes bad, but if I find a piece on the bottom that's discolored and soggy, I just throw it out.

Here, turtle bone is CHEAPER than cuttle bone. It's the same, and doesn't have the wire, so I don't see a reason not to buy it. It's 2 bucks for a box of two were as 1 piece with the wire in the bird section is 1.49....
