Yesterday I went to Petland to get some Ghost Shrimp for Michelangelo to eat and also to clean the tank.

I get there and the guy acted like they didn't have any, but I saw some in with the guppies (more like a swarm of guppies that tank was so full of them) so he look at me like oh goodness no don't make me..but I want my shrimp.

So he goes and gets tons of guppies in with the shrimp. Well he doesn't have the 3 dozen I need and he looks over in this other tank and tahdah more shrimp..but apparently there was some fish in there too and he got those.

So I get home, and I'm like wow..I already have a lot of guppies I don't need this many (there were seriously about 4 dozen guppies in that bag)
But I got to looking at the guppies and they had flesh colored bumps all over them. And they weren't the normal color gray either, they all had a reddish hue to them (and yes I have minnows and no these were not minnows, they were guppies) I figured the bumps were cancer as I have one guppy in my tank who has those bumps and I can't catch him for the life of me to get him out of there. But every single one of these except for one guppy had these bumps and it's not normal..neither is that red hue. I felt horrible but I didn't want diseased fish in my tank..so I kept the one cause I felt bad for it and said bye bye to the rest.

I then get to looking and there are these eel like fish in there, and they look evil and mean. They're long, about three inches long and very slender, like an eel or a snake. Have short fins near their heads and are greyish green with spots down them. They were going after one another and I've seen shows where fish that look like them, go into the gills of other fish and kill them. So no way was those things going in there and I had no idea what they were anyways..and it kinda freaked me out. So I said bye bye to them cause ain't no way I'm having them kill my other fish and turtle.

And by this time, the shrimp have started attacking one another and eating each other..I was not pleased.

But I would think that Petland would take better care of what animals they have and realize that their stock was not up to par and was sick.

So fair warning to those who get live food at petland..CHECK THEM FIRST!

Yeah. They're hiring new managers and I thought about it, except I'd probably get fired because with all of those guppies, I would have sent them back to the supplier and demanded disease free guppies, and I would do that every single time. I'd want to see quality, healthy products, not ones that are obviously diseased.

Hah, I don't know about where you people live, but all the petlands here overcharge for every product (1.5-2x the price of everywhere else), not to mention that they have very unhealthy fish and related organisms.

They pretty healthy and active in the clean water and such in the store, but once you buy them, they all die within a few days, rarely does one ever make it past a week.

All the fish I have ever bought from Petland in the past have died relatively quickly (I checked thorougly and they all seemed in perfect health), and many friends of mine which have also bought aquatic pets also suffered the same fate.

sounds like that petstore, not just the employee, has a case of ''i'm not paid enough to care" the conditions they're kept in sounds bad enough, horrid customer service.

Yeah they are expensive. Luckily a new petstore opened up so they have some competition here.

As for the fish that I've seen, it too has happened that I buy fish from there and they die quickly. I had a betta (female) that I bought and died the next night..but I knew it was going to happen because they put her in a tank with other male and female bettas, the male kept beating her, and he had ick. Then I bought to barbs and they died. My two plecos, one barb, and a sword tail have made it. I also about another betta from them (male) and about two months later he died. But he had something wrong as he never grew. He stayed the same small itty bitty thing that he was, almost like he couldn't absorb what he was eating.

So yeah I agree, most of the fish have problems. I think it's due to the demand, instead of puppy mills they have fish mills and they're just sending them out right and left and causing these problems. I also think the fish don't get fed. Cause everytime I go in there, when they open the tops to get the fish, they ALL come up begging for food. It's like they only get fed once a week, and probably the cheapest food out there as well to lower costs.

I'm curious about your description of the bumps on your fish, I've had my fish over a year now, and I've lost one after it developed rounded bumps at the base of its tail, and now another one has the same thing. Here's a (blurry, I know) pic of the first fish, I'm just wondering if it's the same thing and if anyone knows what it is, because I hate to let the little guy suffer, and if there's anything I can change in their tank to prevent it I'd like to.

Yep that's what mine has but they were all over, not just at the tail. They act normal but I'm afraid that they would reproduce, make the offspring sick and possibly the turtle. I'm not sure what it is but I'm assuming a form of cancer.
