I recently bought a new submersible heater from petco and just started using it today in the afternoon on my 20 gallon tank, the heater is from aquatic gardens its a blue colored one.

i dont think it works, the water is still cold and i dont want my turtles to get hurt during the night. Does it take 24 hours for the heater to warm the tank up? I have another heater from top fin for my ten gallon tank and it worked fine but i dont use it anymore since i upgraded everything.

does anyone have or had a problem like this with a submersible heater?

I'm not sure about that specific heater, but if the the heater is plugged in and the temperature is set it should work. Put your hand in the water and touch the heater, it should feel slightly warm. Regardless, you should have an aquarium thermometer, depending on the age of your turtle, the water should be at least 72 degrees fahrenheit.

i checked the heater and its not warm the light in it hardly stays on

whats the best thermometer out there to get cuz thats the only thing i dont have

It doesn't matter too much what kind of thermometer you get. I recommend that you get a digital one though. Since the light is on, I'm assuming that it's heating up the tank which is a good sign. When I felt my turtle's water for the first time I felt that it was freezing cold, but I checked the thermometer and it was a good 73 degrees, so I wouldn't worry too much. You still should make sure with a digital thermometer though.

If the light is coming on it is probably working. The heater/light will turn off when the water reaches the desired temp.

double check and make sure its set properly. then if nothing happens then i guess its not working right.

I just got that exact same heater yesterday and I feel like its not working, too. The light only comes on rarely and it doesn't really feel warm. I bought thermometers online so I'm waiting for those to arrive. My turtle seems happy though and the water doesn't feel too cold.

What wattage heater did you get for what size tank?

The one I got is a 50 watt for a 10 gallon tank.
