Used filter purchase

I just bought a used eheim 2080 off ebay. The guy used it for a few months for a saltwater setup.. I am going to give it a real good cleaning and i already purchase all new media. I know I already bought it but now second guessing, is it frowned upon to buy a used filter, even if it runs like new? Also, is there any downside that he used it for saltwater?

It's not frowned upon, but you will have to thoroughly cleaning it. First, all used media has to be replaced. Next, clean every inch you can. A plastic brush/tooth brush helps. Finally, without any media, I would run it with warm water. Add something to help disinfect, like diluted bleach (2 oz to a gallon of water makes a weak solution) to do this. Rinse well repeatedly and let air dry for 12-24 hours.
