Before setting everything up and buying my Southern Painted, what are your opinions/experiences with the HOT Magnum 250?

Another question, how do you extend the canister pipe so it reaches lower levels of water?

Not too sure about the HOT Magnum 250 but Marineland's products are generally OK. Other HOTs like the AquaClear sell extension tubes, the 250 might as well. If not, you'll need to be creative. One of the best things about the AquaClear pipe is that the strainer is part of it and nearly impossible for it to trap a turtle.

Most filters are rated for fish gallons. Magnum 250 is rated for 55 gallon fish tank. Turtles need 3-4x's flow of fish gallons due to how messy they are. Marineland has some good products. If you are going to have a 20 gallon tank for your Painted it could work but you may be cleaning it every 5 days. The 250 only does mechanical / chemical but you could introduce bio media if you can come up with a way.

They also sell extension tubes or "DIY" http://www.marineandreef.com/Marineland ... s_s/83.htm
