Hello im new to these forums but I've had this question for awhile and google can't seem to help me so I figured id come here. I realize that what im planning is a unpopular idea, however I know it can be done succesfully and my intent is almost purely for personal owner ship of the clutch. But my question is what species of turtles can be succesfully mated, I.e. hypridyzed, with my ,Mississippi Map turtle. Im not looking to release them. This also will take years as my sawbacks r only a few years old and any turtle I aquire to do this for id like to raise from a hatchling, I find they become more personable this way. So please any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated. I hope none of u judge my intent with this to harshly.

Pretty much possible with turtle who genetics are closly related. That said anything from the subfamily Deirochelyinae: Cooters, chicken turtles, diamondbacks terrapins, painted turtles and sliders.

Just cause you put a male and female together doesnt mean anything will happen. You have basically less then a 1% chance something will happen. Only known hybrids of maps i know of are Map x Res and Map x Diamondbacks.

Yeah, personally im more interested in creating a RES x map hybrid than anything else but I would also like to cross breed a few of the different types of maps as well. I personall find their appearance to be quite beautiful and would like to see what I could come up with. Its a pity the chances r so small, the hybrids I've seen so far have been gorgeous and unique. It'd be a nice addition to the rest of my turtle family. Ive been having alot of issues finding what turtles belong to what family tho. Google once again is failing me. Its only giving me stiff on sea turtles for the most part.

Oh my lord those lil guys r adorable :D and im surprised u say 2nd gen. I was under the assumption that hybrids were sterile? Or at least that's what most of my research has shown. Especially with distant turtle relations. I guess Diamond back terrapins r even further related to maps than RES. But with those cute lil buggers I may have to look into getting a DBT female as well lol

Parents: http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b193/ ... %20to%205/

Im not sure on the sterile part. I dont think ive ever read anything on trying to breed them since people avoid doing it. These turtles were a mistake too that wasnt susposed to happen but i guess he decided to see what happens when you breed hybrids together. Lucky he did cause it produced some very interesting guys. He actually had parents and hatchlings for sale this year as one group for alot. I dont know if they sold.

Wow, that is so amazing :D it gives me alot of hope for what im wanting to do. Those parent hybrids were gorgeous as well. This really excites me :) I wonder why there is such a negative stigma to hybridyzing when it can yeild such attractive and legitimate offspring.
