I have allways wondered if turtles can see colour or do they see in black and white.
i think that they do see in coloure.
i have done some tests, i have drew a turtle and coloured it in rainbow coloures.
i have stuck the pictures to the outside of the tank.
they stare at it all the time, its like they are saying to it
" hay....your the new guy......whats your name?..........its o.k take your time"
so they do notice the picture.
any ideas?

I believe they do see colour. Mine tend to go for brightly coloured foods (red/yellow peppers, carrots)

My guy doesn't care about red at all. He just has strong preferences for certain things.

Maybe he's red-green color blind.

Funny, my turtle likes green. When I got a small apple peel ( I was eating an apple in front of her tank) and showed it to her, and see if she wanted it, but she ignored it... Same happens with other red/orange things.

When ever I pull out the bright green plastic tweezers she goes crazy, swimming back and forth extremely fast, I was afraid she might jump out of the tank!

I think they do... whenever I put on my coat or hat, the same one I always wear when I go out, karlyn gets frantic cause she knows Im leaving... so I think she recognizes the colors of the clothes Im wearing? Shes like, "HEY! HEY! WHERE YOU GOING?! I WANT A SNACK!" lol :)

Red eared sliders have been scientifically proven to see in color. There have been quite a few experiments on the species because their color vision is excellent. They did the behavioral experiments as well as microscopic examination. Turtles can distinguish between colors very well, particularly in experiments involving treats for choosing the correct color! This shows both accute color perception and problem solving ability.

They're supposed to see the same range of colors as humans do.

Yes, they see all colors. Sheba loves red, but she also knows what a blueberry looks like (those are her FAVORITE food!!!! She goes completely NUTS over blueberries!). She also sees green & prefers the green romaine lettuce over the purple/red lettuce.

I believe they do because my Red-Eared Slider only eats green food like algae
