Other Turtle Discussion :: Ideas for other pets

I got my RES a couple of weeks ago and I fell in love with reptiles in general. lol I was just wondering, I'm thinking of getting another type of reptile (terrarium, not aquatic). Does anyone know any land based reptiles that make good pets and are relitively easy to take care of? (i.e. don't grow too large).

Leopard geckos are good beginner lizards. I think they top up at 6 to 8 inches. Two adults can live in a 20 gallon tank. Do a google or yahoo search for "leopard gecko care sheets" and you'll find a lot of useful info. I was going to get one but decided instead to stick with turtles for now. As for snakes and other reptiles I'm not sure what's best for beginners. Whatever you do, do a lot of research before making your decision (although I think most of us here have learned that from our turtles)

Hey, those look pretty cool. I might get one. I'm getting a bigger tank for Leo for my birthday! (YAY UPGRADES!) And I plan on using the 20 gallon tank that he is in now for some other type of reptile, most likely the leopard gecko. Right now I'm thinking of getting 1 male and 2 females, because you can't put 2 males together. If I do that, will they breed? In other words a couple months from now will I have 3 adult geckos and a whole batch of babies to worry about?

They'll probably breed. If you want more than one, just get 2 females...really no reason for 3 is there? Most of the pet stores I've been to won't sell males anyway. Not real sure about the reasoning behind that. Also, if you have a male and end up with 2 females that want nothing to do with him, they'll end up getting harassed by him, which will stress them out and could cause illness. If it were me, I'd get 2 females.

Make sure you do your research first, as my mom and I have learned the hard way, more than one isn't always the way to go.

Yeah she's still trying to blame me for her having toad issues ..

Trying to treat the kids/grandkids equally just isn't always possible. They're going to have to learn how to share pets so we don't have to deal with the reproduction issues anymore

1. No but a tarantula makes a good pet. As long as they are in a large terrarium, I think they are real cool.

lol My friend has a tarantula in a 10 galon terrairum. They do make a good pet, but they don't move much during the day. B/c he already has one, I want to get something different.

Cam and Flutterby, thanks for the advice, but I've done a lot of research (and I'm still doing more) and as far as I can tell, putting two females together doesn't cause any problems, nor would they have any trouble fitting in a 20 gallon terrarium.

i have a tarantula and its so freaking boring, the most exciting thing in that tank is the baby crickets that have hatched and are growing, ( currently theyre like the size of rice ) lol.

get a ball python, theyre gentle, dont need light, 1 mouse a week, easy.
