Other Turtle Discussion :: HELP!! Need Loving home for Rescued Adult RES!!

My wife and I have recently rescued a captive raised 9 year old RES from someone who was going to release it. I would love to keep him but we just don't have the room. He is currently in my 55 gallon that I was using for my other RES's that were moved to a smaller tank temporarily so He will have to go to a home that has a large tank...55 gallon is really too small for this guy. He is about 9" and is eating well and is healthy. I live in western NY and would like him to go to a home nearby as I won't ship him.

Just curious, but I thought you said you wouldn't ship him???

I would rather not ship him mainly due to two reasons
1) In most cases I would have no idea as to the type of home he would be going to and wether or not they would be able to provide the proper environment a turtle of this size would require.
2) I am not familiar with the shipping process for live animals

TurtleSirens operates a turtle rescue and has had a lot of experience shipping turtles and torts and I am sure knows the proper way to ship with little stress to the animal. I am also confident that "Gus" would be going to someone who knows how to care for him and has the proper setup.

I have not had the oportunity to talk with Turtlesirens as of yet. I was going on an assumption based on her "website" link in her profile.
Regardless, I would rather not ship but if I can't find someone local, I have no other recourse but to ship.

Based on the mentioning that you didn't want your turtle shipped, I offered as a last resort.
TRLI is an organization that a group of herpetologists and hobbyists from the Long Island Herpetology Society, me being one of them.
I have had many experiences of shipping turtles and tortoises as well as releasing them.
We are happy to welcome your turtle, but if you can find someone local, it is the best choice for you and your turt.
