It really depends on how much and what you feed it, and it's environment. Slow growth is always best. I heard an inch a year is good but mine grew much faster. My res are almost a year old and already almost 5 inches long each. I overfed for the first month or two because I listened to the morons at the pet store. Follow the guidelines for feeding on this site and keep an eye out for excessive shedding or pyramiding. Generally, they're to be fed every day, the amount the size of their head up until 1 year old and every other day after that. I noticed slight pyramiding on my guys so I cut them down to Mon, Wed, Fri a few months ago. They're growing slower now and the pyramiding is evening out.

pyramiding is a condition of the shell when fed too much protien. The shell begins to grow over before teh old shell has had a chance to shed. I'm not sure about the health problems that accompany it, I'm sure other people will fill in the blanks.
