Who would have thought there would be such a thing as turtle talk? Its funny cause im a member of probetalk.com (ford probe) and who would believe that? Ha.

Anyways I recently aquired 2 baby red eared sliders. I believe I got them sick and didnt realize it cause I was new (and still am). One ended up dying about 3/4 weeks ago, but Im glad to say that the other one is doing great! Hes finally active and eating like a champ, not to metion swimming around the tank all day like its his job (or her).

Anyways I've always wanted a turtle as a kid, but turtles are not to be sold in VA, or from what I've been told.....never seen them in pet store (maybe the 4" rule). So I got my guys from a store in Myrtle Beach SC while visiting the beach. Once I saw them, I had to have one. Took them on the long journey to VA and story continues from there.

Anyways just saying hi, and checking out the rest of the site

Welcome :) I'm sorry to hear of your loss, but it's wonderful your other one is doing well. Have you named them yet?
And what is their set-up like?

As of now hes in a 10 gallon tank, obviously nothing special. But by the time he gets around 4 inchs I plan on placing him in an outdoor pond. But I dont know if thats a good idea yet, ill have to look into it.

I am slowly making the tank more attract and looking for thing I can put in their to make him happy.

What do you guys recommed I put in the tank for him to enjoy rather than a floating island?

Welcome!! Take a look in the photo gallery for some ideas on how others have set up their tanks. Some plants, rocks (larger than the turtles head), bubble wand.. there's a lot you can do :)

You'll have to upgrade that tank before he's 4". The rule of thumb is 10 gallons of water for every inch of turtle. A 4" turtle in a 10 gallon tank is going to be very cramped for swimming space. What sort of setup do you have? Filter, lighting, heater.. etc?

Definately, I just meant when he reaches that size he will no longer be in any tank. I have a repto filter which sucks and I will replace here in acouple days, I have lighting, a little heater, and a floating island. I will check out the pictures and see what people have done, thanks for the tip.

Welcome :). By lighting, do you mean both a UVB light and a heat lamp?

No just a heat lamp.......I need both? I assumed the light in the house was sufficient?

normal lights only give off uva light which is not UVB.. UVB is what they need as a replacement for natural sunlight in order to make use of the calcium they need for a healthy shell and bones.

Read the following article regarding lighting and basking..

PS: Steve, this time I checked :)

Welcome in TMNT. I'm a fairly new owner myself. I'm sure you'll find like I have, that these guys are very helpful and have answers to any question you can come up with. They are also fun to talk with in "People Talk."

Good luck with your new RES!

With the main site up now..

http://www.redearslider.com/

It's a lot easier to find the info there than to direct people to the stickies (of which most people have no clue what you're talking about) All the info and then some is on the main site.

Yep, post pictures, we LOVE pictures :)
