I really don't know but he's about 2" (carapace) long. How old do you think he is??? I'm really curious how "fast" they grow.

Well, Koopa is about 5 months old and 2inches. He still had his eggtooth when we got him so we could figure that his hatching date was sometime within the previous month.

But all turtles grow at different rates, depending upon gender (which you can't tell until they are 4inches), environment, diet and disposition. Some turtles will just grow slower/faster than others and then some grow too fast by being overfed which isn't healthy for them. Others may grow too slow because of poor housing/environment that is provided for them.

How long have you had him? What is his setup and diet like? :)

P.S. I forgot to add that after the first year about an inch a year is considered a good growth rate. They will grow quite a bit in the first year (around 2-3inches in SCL is a good length at a year)but should grow slower and steadier after that if they are being maintained in a good environment and a healthy diet. :D

For now he has a 10 gal tank with gravel and heater set to 78F and with a small dock for basking. UVA/UVB lamp (he's basking right now) and filter. Some fake driftwood and plants. HE is feeding on Reptimin as staple food 2-4 pellets a day and the shrimp thingy once a week. We brought him from Missisauga, ON a week ago. He's still shy. Only today he basks on the dock and doesnt move even if we are near - even when my son jumps around.

The water temp needs to be 75. Do you know what the basking area temp is. As for gravel in the tank I would take them out because he might eat them. :D

If the gravel is smaller than his head I would remove it immediately. It can cause serious health problems if he eats it, and he will try if it's smaller than his head. ;)

Sounds like you are off to a good start but try to upgrade his home as soon as possible. Think 10 gallons of tank per inch of turtle as a guide to his habitat. And go as large as you can now, to avoid needless upgrades later. Koopa only remained in his 10 gallon almost 4 months and even then that was probably too long. He's now in a thirty gallon that more than likely will need to be upgraded within the next few months, so I am already checking classifieds, etc for a good priced larger tank that he'll need. And take time to research online for your purchases prior to heading to the "pet store", you can usually find much better deals online. :)

The water temp at 78 is perfect for a hatchling like you have, but after a year old or so 72-75 is recommended for older turtles with the basking temp around 90. :)

Shrimp treats are okay occasionally (about once a month) and the pellets sound good. How many veggies do you give? It's important to start them on veggies even when they are young and may not take to it immediatly. Veggies will provide a good source of vitamins and help give him a healthy balanced diet that he needs. There's a list under the feeding section of what to feed and not to feed. Also, providing cuttlebone is good for their calcium intake and will help keep their shells healthy when they bask under their UVB light. :)

Very cute little turtle. What does the rest of the set-up look like?
