Hi there Just wondering if anyone would possibly know why my turtle is constantly scratching her back feet together. She is pushing her feet into the small stone garden out by her pond, she tends to spend most of the day doing this. :D

Sounds almost like she is trying to nest? How big is she and do you have a male with her.

She doesnt have a male with her, she's on her own, she measures around 20cm long and 17cm wide.
She's been rubbing her shell a lot too, and when i gently rub her shell for her she loves it (well guessing from her reaction she;s enjoying it).
In her out door area there are some limestones in the garden, im hoping the limestone aren't causing some type of aggrevation to her (by causing this itchyness)?
Is there any type of stones that RES cant have in there outdoor environment?
Im just scratching my head a bit, as im new to this and still learning.
Kind thanks

I would feel for some eggs, though she would be showing other symptoms if she were gravid.

First, welcome.
I won't address the egg stuff - not my forte
Penelope scratches her legs together while basking (who knows why)...I just hear a little scritch-scratch throughout the day.
Second, from what hear (and experienced) turtles love to have their "back scratched"
Not much help...just mainly want to say welcome!

Thankyou for your kind welcome.
Yeah Oscar does scratch her back legs together too, but since she's been out of her tank and introduced to a brand new out door environment she backs up into out small grass plants and is like she's digging for gold with her back feet. its quite funny to watch, but am stumped as to know why she;s doing this.
But hey, big thanks for your info :D

Hello welcome to the site. If she is digging in the dirt with her back legs, that would be a good indication she is going to lay infertile eggs. Yes, a female RES will lay legs even when they aren't fertile by a male. I'd say let her do her thing without any interruption, to not stress her, and she should be fine. Where do you live, it is cold in most of the U.S. right now?
