Hi everyone!

My name is Alexandra, and about two weeks ago my cousin surprised me with the belated birthday gift of a red-eared slider. After much deliberation, (and Google results telling me "It's a boy!") I decided to name him Beelzebub, Prince of the Underworld. But another cousin of mine likes to call him Fancy.

I'm afraid I'm going to unknowingly do something wrong and accidentally kill him? Really afraid.
I'm also pretty sure he hates me, but I think he's an alright dude.

Bask, Beelzebub. Bask!

(He needs a larger basking dock and tank. I'm working on it. He was unplanned for.)

His favorite thing (besides basking) seems to be standing in front of his filter and allowing the air/pressurized water coming out to spray against the underside of his shell.

Thank you!
A lot of people suggested I name him Freddie because of those claws, but I feel like he's more mischievous than psychotic.

Welcome welcome~! My, those nails are scary! The thing with the filter, I personally call it turtle surfing, (which Dumbork also likes a LOT) and I'm glad there are other turtles who enjoy it. :)

Welcome!
He doesn't hate you - he's a turtle. They can be skittish when they first move in (new environment), hiss at you (a sign of fright, not meanness) and are more than happy to take a nip at you.
It's all part of being a turtle.
He looks gorgeous, by the way :)

Is there anything I can do to ease the transition? He hasn't hissed or nipped but he's VERY skittish. If I approach his tank, he usually swims towards and faces the wall behind it (if he's basking he slides off the dock) and won't move until I leave or feed him.

Handle him more often and stare at him while he is basking. That is how I got Dexter to get him eased anyway. For some reason, everytime Shelby is around him, he is scared of anyone who padses and is starting to do if often. So all I can say is that it's impossible.

Give it a bit more time, maybe just try some interaction during feeding times.
