Hey all!

I've had my two awesome red ear sliders since January of 2004, so they are approximately a year and 10 months old! I initially started off with three turtles, purchased from a website and delivered to my house while I was already back at college from winter break. This meant that they were left outside of my Pennsylvania home from approximately noon to 4pm, when my mom normally gets home from work. When I got home (later that night), I opened the little container and couldn't find the turtles! After sifting through the moss, I found them, all 3! I knew I wouldn't be able to tell them apart initially, because they were all small and looked strikingly similar. After about a month of living at college with me (technically turtles aren't allowed, but I had a cool RA) I started to notice that one was larger than the others. After reading up abit, I found out that he was a she! Due to her large stature, I named her "Bertha", because she's the alpha-female of the lot. I named the smallest "Twerp" sort of a combination of "terp" (as in the Terapins) and twerp, because he was tiny! The last one I named "Gus" after the famous composer, Gustav Mahler.
While I was home for Easter break '04, Twerp passed away  and I was left with two turtles. Last Christmas, my parents gave me money to go buy new housing for them. I got a 10 gallon tank, a new filter, and a "bridge" so they may bask. My dad mounted a lamp on top of their tank to give them the light they want/need.
These turtles have been my family away from home! They have their own personalities and are just the coolest pets to own. I never thought that those quarter sized turtles would become the big ones they are today!

Bertha is roughly 6-7 inches long, while Gus is 4-5.

Glad to be a part of this community! :D

Welcome! Interesting choice to name your turtle after a classical composer...are you a music major?

Be sure to read through the basic care page on the main site. It has a lot of great information.

I am! Actually, I've recently graduated with my bachealors of science in music education. I'm living at home now. It's funny, because Mahler's music is big and brassy, but Gus is small and diminuative. Bertha pushes him around!

I just hope the fat turtle (Bertha) doesn't sing soon!

Welcome! Since you're home now, it would be a good idea to upgrade their tank size substantially. At 5 and 7 inches, they should be in a tank that is at least 90 gallons. You might want to get a stock tank which is way cheaper than an aquarium tank.

Great artistic names!!

Where would I be able to get stock tanks? I'm under kind of a limited budget...

Would I need all new filtration/heating equipment?

Thanks for the help!

Stock tanks are cheaper than glass tanks. They can be found at farming supply stores and places like lowes. Unfortunately, when you increase the amount of water, you usually need a stronger filter and heater. I know what it's like to have to do the upgrades. I tried to take the cheap way out of things and then had to go back and buy new equipement. The good thing is, the initial costs are the worst and it's usually downhill from there. Also, Christmas is coming soon, scary as that sounds, so you could add that to a wish list.

If it is still more than you are wanting to spend, rubbermaid containers can be found at walmart for 20 bucks or so. When you talk about that much water though, they will need some support and probably need to be replaced often. It might even be better to separate them and get two smaller set ups. Choices, choices...

I've decided that I'm going tank hunting tomorrow. Does color matter? I've seen some opaque tanks and some translucent ones. Do the turtles thrive better in different kinda of tanks? My turtles seem to be happy in their tank, but they need more basking surface which this smaller tank can't provide.
It's frustrating because I don't have unlimited funds and my parents sometimes get upset when I mention spending money on my already costly pets. We had a talk this evening and my mom's giving me $40 to work with. I'm going to look at Lowe's and walmart tomorrow and go to Petsmart to see if they have anything for me.

Wish me luck! I'll try to get pics up soon so I can get some input.
