Just thought I'd introduce myself, since I've been browsing about the forum. I'm slowly saving up money to hopefully buy/adopt my own RES come Spring/Summer. I'm trying to save up atleast $1500 so I can get my RES everything he needs on day one, and extra cash for him for vet visits (which I plan on making an apointment the moment I own/adopt to know for myself he's healthy the moment I have him in hopes he's not sick in any form.) The reason why such a high goal is cause I learned from my friend and sis, Kazari24, RES can get to be expensive and need a lot of TLC (as all pets do)

Thanks to browsing about the forum and site itself I have pretty much covered all the basics on how to give my RES a healthy start, and even found a herp vet in my area that's a 15 minute drive away (which amazingly is the same place where we take our dogs and cat for check ups, and Mom says they're good people which is a bonus to know)

I've checked out my local PetCo pricing everything that I will need, and the RES they have there at the moment are about 4-5" long, so I know I will atleast need atleast a 50 gallon tank to start off with, should I buy one from them. If anyone could please share pictures of their turtle(s)' set up for ideas, it would truely help out some. I have read about basking areas, proper lighting, and necessities, and want to do the best I can to make my RES happy when he moves into his new home. Thanks for any and all help, and sorry for the long inrto :)

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see someone that is doing their homework BEFORE getting a res :D :D I would suggest adoption before purchasing from a pet store because there are so many unwanted turts being turned in to rescues/shelters every day.

Since I never pass up an opportunity to show off my critters, here they are. This is a 125 gal long that houses two 6in res. I'm using a zoomed dock as a ramp and a milk crate with slate rock on top for a basking area. The light is a uva/uvb combo. The filter is a Fluval 404 canister...works great. There are river rocks and plants in there, along with several feeder fish.

Thank jenaero for the help. I learned growing up pets need a lot of TLC, we had horses when I was a preteen and at my first high school (we moved when I was in the middle of my sophmore year) I went to an aggricultural school and looked into the small and large animals programs and learned more on how to take care of certain animals properly. Sadly when we started to learn on fish, turtles, and reptiles, my class was switched to the large animals (horses and cows) so I wasn''t able to learn too much on turtles, and I truely do want to learn more and I want to make sure when I get one he's happy and healthy.

I am strongly looking to adopt, as there are a lot of different animals out there seeking homes, but I'm not going to seriously start looking until I feel that I'm ready, cause I don't want to send false hope at the moment to current owners/adoption agencies
