Hi there!
I registered a few weeks ago and thought I'd give a brief intro before posting a question.
I'm a wife, mom, cat & fish owner, nurse, nature lover, active in various non-profit orgs, and recently, a "mom" to a RES approx. 1.5 inches found and given to me by my dad.
In the past 10 days I've saved 2 different turtles/tortoises from sure freeway death (and a few toads too).
I always "relocate" them to a safe place within a few miles of where found. The reason I wound up with baby "Sophie" (my daughter insists she is a female) is because my dad was certain the baby RES would become an easy snack to the hawks and barn owls that live on his country property. Interesting enough, he has no water on his land and is about 2 miles from any water. Does a mom turtle lay eggs so far from water??? I ask because someone suggested maybe the turtle was dropped by a bird that picked it up at the lake.
I have read up on much RES care and I think I'm doing what I'm supposed to. I sense that readers here appreciate photos of turtle homes before answering specifics. I'll try to post photos later. My husband has had numerous aquariums with much success over the years. The whole turtle thing is new to us but we're trying our best to give her a good home.

I look forward to learning from those of you who have so much knowledge and experience!
Thanks!

Welcome to the site! There's no pressure to post pictures :) and feel free to ask what you want. 2 miles is very far away, he could have also been abandoned by an uneducated keeper.

Ya, two miles is awful far. Sounds like what Steve said.

How's their habitat at the moment? We'd love to give you advice and tips. ^_^

I might have thought that about any other place but I doubt in the area where my dad lives.
He lives in very rural Central Texas with absolutely nothing but old farmers, crops and orchards in the area. I doubt any of these 70 yr. old men would pick up a turtle and there are no kids in the area. The closest neighbor is half a mile away. But there is a lake about 2 miles away. Someone I spoke to in my town said maybe a big bird picked it up to eat it and dropped it accidentally while flying. I guess I'll never know.
But when my dad saw him/her by his wood pile next to his house, he felt for sure the hawks were watching it and would swoop down to get it. He figured I'd give it a good home. We're trying. It's a whole lot of fun watching the turtle swim around!

Well...she has two habitats. She has a 10 gal. aquarium with a floating rock and a heater where she stays most of the time. We have a 30 gal. that currently has one lonely fish living in it. The turtle will get the 30 gallon aquarium eventually.
The other habitat we use for the turtle is a big plastic container box, which is dry, but we have a "pool" type dish in it that she can enter and swim. We take her out to the yard in this box daily for fresh air and sunshine. I always keep half the box in the shade so she can escape the TX heat if she wants.
I'm sure I need some help w/ the housing and will post photos and info one day soon.
Plus, we're moving and might possibly install a koi/turtle pond in the backyard. Before we do that, I'll need much advice (like, for instance, if this is even feasible as housing for a RES).
Edited to add - and we have no gravel in either home for her. We thought about getting some in the beginning but I learned from this site that gravel is a big no-no! So thanks for that! Now if someone would only tell PetsMart to change their literature, which suggests gravel for turtle tanks...

Hi Night Nurse! Now, I'm wondering what "rural central Texas are you're in, as I'm in centex as well. lol. Well, good luck with your little one! This site has been a LIFE SAVER for me. As you mentioned, lots of literature is incorrect or (i've found) contradictory. Welcome!

Actually, I'm in North TX, north of D/FW but the turtle was found at my dad's house, in Comanche County, a few miles from Lake Proctor.
