I am the proud parent of a 2 year old male (John) and 6 year female (Jude, now Judy) RES. They have the dorkiest personalities.
My babies are Judith aka Judy aka Jude (8+ years), Biggie aka Big Girl aka Bitter (1+ years), and Yella (1 year? by size)!

Why is the filter tube wrapped? They look good but definitely need a larger basking area.

Taped cause the tubes aren't air tight, lack of suction. And He has a lily pad dock in his tank now, but doesn't seem to like it. Thinking about trading it out for the other type...

Also, he acts like a big baby if he can't be in the same tank as her. They grew very attached to each other quickly...

You can buy replacement sections from Planet Rena or use something like PVC pipe.

Will check into that. Thinking of replacing the filter altogether. The impeller breaks too often...

As for the basking dock, Penelope outgrew hers a long time ago, but refuses to give it up...fancy ATBA and all
I doubled-up (stacked two large Zoo-Med docks on one suction cup holder). It keeps her floating fine - all 3.5 pounds of her. Just have to remember to take them out and give them a scrub once a week to remove any build up.

How long have you had the XP filter? If the tubes are cracking, you are probably forcing them together too tightly. If the tank is 75+ gallons, look into the FX5 filter.

@Steve: They aren't cracking, they loosely fit together. I ordered adapter tubes to extend them long ago and they have stopped fitting together. It is a Marineland canister filter C-220. The tank is 45 gal. Planning on upgrade her to a larger tank, but the only sizes at the stores are 60 and lower. And like I said before, am going to go with a more reliable filter since the impeller breaks every couple of months.

@Penelope: Do you have a picture of the setup you have so I can get an idea of what it looks like? Also, I clean the docks often, don't like them getting fuzzy. The feeder fish help with it a bit, but sometimes they need an extra scrubbing now and again.

And I don't know what John's issue is. He never wants to dock unless she's there... Have to take him out completely to get him to dry everyday.
